Police Arrest 6 Men Over Rape Of Teenage Orphans

Six men have been arrested for allegedly raping teenage girls from an orphanage in India’s southern state of Kerala, police officials said on Tuesday.

District police Chief Rajpal Meena said that the girls were lured into a shop near their orphanage in Wayanad district by the suspects who offered them chocolates.
The men were arrested on Monday following a complaint by the orphanage.

“There are a total of seven victims, who were sexually abused over the last two months,’’ Meena said.

Police said the girls alleged that the men filmed the rapes and used the footage to blackmail them into further sexual acts.

However, the suspects have been charged with rape as well as offences under the Protection of Children from Sexual Offences act.

Media reports said medical tests had confirmed rape.

Women’s right activists expressed the shock at the “horrific” crimes and demanded the strongest possible action against the accused.

Report says sexual violence has been a focus of public attention in India since the fatal gang rape of a student on a bus in New Delhi in December 2012.

Activists say little has changed in attitudes towards sexual assault, and attacks on women continue unabated.
